On Friday, the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had submitted a memorandum of demands regarding the mode of examination to the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University.
On Thursday, Delhi University announced that the university would adopt ‘open book’ exams if the pandemic outbreak does not normalize within a particular period.
ABVP has since then expressed their displeasure regarding this decision taken by the administration. They showed disapproval for the conclusions, and how very little time was provided for any possible discussions with various stakeholders about the matter. Also what they’re being bothered by is that fact that only one declarative model was drawn, and that too decided without accessing any other alternative modes, stated the student outfit. “Extensive dialogues with all stakeholders should have taken place for a better solution.”
More options should be given to students related to the mode of evaluation and questions that need to be answered and properly addressed.
DU is a very diverse university wherein, about 40% of the students come from various parts of the country; most of them had gone back home for the semester break and have not been able to come back since then because of the nationwide lockdown. Because of this, several students do not have the required course material for continuing their studies back home. Many surveys and notices circulating suggest that there should be proper evaluation through standard methods, or with other innovative yet feasible options. Moreover, the ABVP demanded that the students of the 1st and 2nd year be promoted as it is.
The ABVP extended another proposal which stated that only that portion of the syllabus which was completed in the classroom via a traditional teaching method, should be considered for the examination. It is concerning emphasizing the educational aspect rather than focussing on just the exams in the education system.
Finally, the ABVP also demanded that complex yet other viable modes of evaluation methods like assignments, viva voce, projects, MCQs, and so on should be explored.
