In its letter to the vice-chancellor of Delhi University, National Students Union of India (NSUI) has demanded for cancellation of final year examinations all set to begin from 7th June in view of the prevailing conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic. The letter was written by the National Secretary Lokesh Chugh, and addressed to P.C. Joshi, from NSUI to DU.
The union writes – “India is facing a double crisis situation wherein, on one hand the country is already fighting against that pandemic and in the middle we are now also fighting against the new epidemic that is Black Fungus. The situation is deteriorating and is out of control of the govt. In such conditions it is not at all justified to put additional pressure on students regarding the examination.”
Subsequently, Chugh talks about how only the multimillionaires of the country have remained unaffected by the pandemic and the government has failed miserably to undertake the task of limiting the spread. Thus, the Congress’ scholar wing thinks it unjustified for students to have to undertake examinations in such trying times. The letter also reads, ‘If not, then NSUI will be bound to come on streets and protest for the student community.’
As per the latest notice issued by the varsity, the exams are all set to begin from the 7th of June. The exams were deferred till June 1st and were later pushed by another week as the circumstances became more terrifying. The university has not released any additional notices with its plans to cancel the examinations, and continues to deliberate on different modes of conduction to make the process easier for students. In the notice, DU also stated that the final date sheet and further guidance for the examinations will be released soon on the official website of the university.
Examinations in such conditions can put immense stress of the students in addition to risking their lives. While the university is yet to make any reactions to this letter, the need is to keep in mind that the lives of hundreds of students are at stake. Just like the letter written by NSUI to DU, these are young kids expectantly waiting for a notice that would look at this from their perspective and prove to be favorable.
