The Regulations Amendment Committee of Delhi University suggested paid maternity leave for ad-hoc teachers, in its final meeting on Thursday. This committee looks over the operational aspects of UGC.¬†It has 20 members comprising¬†four principals, seven Academic Council members and other representatives from various departments.
There are more than 4,500 ad-hoc teachers working at DU and majority of them are women. Female teachers tend to delay their marriage or postpone having children so that they don’t lose their jobs. Hence, this move will benefit them and free them from the restrictions they encounter.
Pankaj Garg, a committee member said, ‚ÄúAd-hoc teachers are appointed for four months. As of now, their situation is so bad, that some of them join work two days after delivery so that they don‚Äôt lose their jobs. We have recommended that at any point during the term, if the teacher delivers, for the period after that, she should be given maternity leave with salary‚Äù.
Hansraj Suman, another member of this committee, cited this decision to be important based on ‘humanitarian grounds’. He said,¬†‚ÄúIn MNCs and other workplaces too, contractual employees get maternity leave. So why shouldn‚Äôt DU have this? Considering this, the decision was taken. During the leave, only guest lecturers can be appointed, and the teacher will rejoin once her leave period is over‚Äù.¬†
According to the committee’s chairperson, it will take 15-20 days to formulate the entire decision. This suggestion will become an ordinance after the Academic and Executive Councils approve it.
