Indraprastha College for Women was established in 1924. It is the oldest women’s college at the University of Delhi. Located in Civil Lines it is a NAAC grade-A accredited college with many laurels to its name. Prominent alumni of the college include Sucheta Kriplani, Meira Kumar, Qurratulain Hyder, Salma Sultan and many more.
The college can easily be accessed via the Civil Lines metro station which is right next to the campus. Auto rickshaws are easily available to take the students to North Campus, Hudson lane, Majnu ka Tila and Kamla Nagar. However, E-rickshaws are a rarity here since the college is a little off-campus. The college also has a bus stop right outside. The favourite stop for IP College students between classes is the nearby Gulaab Singh Tea Stall, also lovingly referred to as Tau’s. Many PG accommodations are available in and around Civil Lines. Students also frequent the Bun Tikki Wala right next to the college gate. The college also has two Hostels. Kalavati Gupta hostel is situated inside the Campus whereas IP Hostel is located just across the road.
The main building of the college is Alipore House. It is a beautiful white building of British architecture in comparison with the red brick buildings of other colleges. The building was initially used as the office and residence of the Commander in Chief of the British Army here in India. Over the years two new academic blocks have been added along with an auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, library, Archives and Museum, Translation and Translation studies centre, etc. The highlight of the college is the many lawns dotted in front of and between the buildings. These lawns provide the much-needed space for socialization and getting friendly with Chameli the campus dog and the peacocks that live here.
ADMINISTRATIVE AND TEACHING STAFF
The administrative and teaching staff are cordial yet strict about their work. Attendance is taken very seriously in the college and thus the teachers are also highly regular. Free speech is encouraged by all. Thus it provides a safe environment to raise one’s voice. As the college doesn’t vote in DUSU elections the campus largely remains peaceful throughout the year.
INTERNSHIPS AND ECA SOCIETIES
The campus is sprawling with events happening in every nook and cranny. Both the department societies as well as ECA societies are highly active. Some of the active ECA societies include Croydon-The Fine Arts Society, Oghma-The English Editorial Society, Abhivyakti-The Dramatics Society, Cadenza-The Western Music Society and the list goes on. The student union along with these societies successfully organizes the college fest every year commonly known as Shruti.
The Placement Cell of the college works towards getting the best internships for the students enrolled. They also handle placement drives and skill enhancement workshops.
Overall, Indraprastha College for Women provides one with a platform to explore the opportunities the world has to offer you.
